Dunlop Trailmax Raid First Look [Dirt-Oriented ADV Tire]

Dunlop Trailmax Raid First Look: For Sale

The new Dunlop Trailmax Raid adventure tire has a 60/40 dirt/pavement bias, according to the manufacturer. The latest model in the Trailmax line, Dunlop says the Raid will work on motorcycles ranging from the largest ADV models to mid-size dual-sport bikes. The new Raid slots between the road-focused Trailmax Mission and the dirt-ready Rally Raid D908RR.

The tread pattern is designed with larger gaps between the knobs in the center to allow for superior traction in the dirt, while the shoulder knobs are closer together to improve edge grip on the pavement. Fans of the Rally Raid will recognize the chevron-style knobs in the center of the Raid.

The rubber compound for the Dunlop Trailmax Raid is sourced from the popular Mutant and Sportmax Roadsmart IV tires, which are heavily street-biased. A high silica content is dispersed through the rubber to improve grip in wet conditions.

The Sportmax line donated the Jointless Belt design, which Dunlop claims “provides greater compliance, ride quality, comfort, and rider feel.”

Tapping into off-road technology, the flex characteristics used in Geomax dirt tires are used for improved impact protection.

To enhance the performance of the front and rear tires, Dunlop used the Mutant’s Dynamic Front Formula. This matches the casing of both tires for balanced performance and a more predictable response.

The front Raid tire is available in three sizes—two radial and one bias ply. In the rear, there are six sizes, divided equally between radial and bias ply. For the front, there is one 21-inch tire and two 19-inch sizes. For use on many dual-sport bikes and the most dirt-oriented adventure bikes, there are two 18-inch rear tires, with four 17-inch rear tires aimed at pure ADV motorcycles.
